The shower is that one place in your home that you might not always think about cleaning. It’s difficult to imagine the shower could use that much cleaning when it’s constantly being washed down with water and soap. However, it’s important to clean your shower on a regular basis.

You even need to schedule days to deep clean it as well. Knowing how to deep clean a shower will ensure its cleanliness and health.

Although the shower is always washed down with water and soaps, it can get dirty quickly. Leftover soap can turn into stubborn soap scum, limescale can form on the showerhead (and on other areas in the bathroom), and mold and mildew can quickly grow on all surfaces.

Now that you know why it’s so important to clean your shower, it’s time to learn some of the best shower cleaning tips! Continue reading below to find out more.

Gather All Cleaning Supplies

The first step in deep cleaning your shower is to gather all your cleaning supplies. There are a few different items you might need to get that full clean you’re looking for. Place everything inside one bucket so you have it all ready to go and by your side when needed.

An old toothbrush, a grout brush, baking soda and vinegar, and an extendable tile and tub scrubber are just a few cleaning supplies to add to your bucket. Once you have everything you need, you can move on to the next step.

Remove Everything

If you’re going to conduct a deep cleaning of the shower, then you need to remove everything from the inside of it. You can’t clean every inch of the shower if there are shampoo bottles on the corners and a shower caddy blocking the tile under the showerhead. Remove everything and throw out empty bottles or anything else that’s old or never used.

Take the time to wipe down each of these items. If you have a shower caddy, then you’ll want to wipe that down as well. Sometimes shower caddies can form a build-up of soap scum and residue on them. You may need to scrub it down well to remove all build-up.

Once all of the items are out of the shower, you can then begin the cleaning process.

Clean the Shower Head

When you begin cleaning your shower, you should start by cleaning the showerhead and then working your way down. Most showerheads are affected by limescale. This is especially true for those living in areas where there’s hard water.

Take a look at your shower head and see if there are white spots on it. There may even be small mineral deposits on it as well. You can clean it by removing it from the shower and placing it in a plastic bag of half white vinegar half water.

Allow it to soak for a few minutes before scrubbing it clean.

Eliminate Mold and Mildew

It’s no secret that showers are the perfect breeding grounds for mold and mildew. Showers are dark and have high humidity levels, which mold and mildew love. Take a quick survey of your shower.

Do you see any signs of mold or mildew? Some common areas for mold growth are in the corners, on the grout, and on the caulking. Keep in mind that mold isn’t always black either.

Mold can come in a variety of colors, even orange and pink! If you spot any strange colors in or around your shower, then it could be mold. Eliminate mold and mildew with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and washing soda and a scrub brush.

Clean the Tile and Grout

Next, you’ll want to clean the shower tile and grout. You can create a mixture of one part hydrogen peroxide with two parts washing soda. Take an old toothbrush or the extendable scrubber and apply the mixture to the grout.

Let this sit for several minutes before using the toothbrush to scrub and rinse. The tile will constantly show water spots from water air drying on each tile. The best way to prevent this is to either dry your shower with a towel after each use or by rinsing it with diluted white vinegar.

Scrub Door Tracks if Applicable

Does your shower have doors on tracks? If so, then you don’t want to forget to scrub the door tracks as well. You can use the same mixture you created for the grout on the door tracks.

Take the extendable scrubber and scrub the tracks clean using the mixture. Once clean, you can rinse the tracks out.

Don’t Forget the Door and the Floor

Now that the entire shower has been cleaned, you can dry it and replace all of your items. However, there’s still one more task to be completed. Don’t forget about the shower door and the floor.

Use your white vinegar solution to mist the shower door. If you have a squeegee, then run it under hot water before pulling it along the shower door. Dry the door with a microfiber cloth.

To clean the floors, use the extendable scrubber and the mixture of washing soda and hydrogen peroxide. Rinse with water once clean. Any shower curtains can be sent through the washing machine and then hung back up to dry.
