Just a little about Okatie, SC.
Okatie, a small community in Jasper County, Georgia, has a rich history dating back to the 18th century when European settlers arrived in the area. The name Okatie comes from the Native American word “Ocati,” meaning “a place for gathering,” which reflects the town’s location on the banks of the Okatie River, named after the Native American tribe who once inhabited the area.
Okatie grew into an important center for the production of indigo, rice, and cotton in the early 1700s, and later became a center for the production of sea island cotton after the Revolution. The town’s location on the Okatie River made it an ideal spot for shipping cotton to Savannah and Charleston. By the mid-19th century, Okatie had become a thriving community with churches, schools, and businesses.
