Thunderbolt, Georgia is a small town located in Chatham County, in the southeastern part of the state. The town was incorporated in 1912 and has a rich history, much of which centers around its unique name. One theory about the town’s name is that it was inspired by a local lightning strike that was so powerful, it was said to have sounded like a thunderbolt. Another theory suggests that the name was chosen as a way to honor the 8th Air Force’s P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes, which were used in World War II and were stationed at the nearby Savannah Army Airfield.
In the early 20th century, Thunderbolt became known for its amusement parks and attractions, including the Thunderbolt Rollercoaster, which was one of the largest and fastest wooden roller coasters in the world when it was built in 1948. The coaster was eventually dismantled in the 1980s, but its legacy lives on in the memories of those who rode it.
