Pembroke, located in Bryan County, Georgia, was once home to various Native American tribes before becoming a town in 1852, named after Pembroke, Wales. During the Civil War, Pembroke was an important transportation hub due to its location on the Central of Georgia Railroad, which was destroyed but later rebuilt. In the late 19th century, Pembroke became a center of agricultural activity, particularly in the production of lumber, turpentine, and cotton. The town experienced a boom in the production of naval stores in the early 20th century.
However, the Great Depression brought economic struggles, which were alleviated by the construction of Fort Stewart in the 1940s.
